American Fork's newly renovated boat harbor is now open, thanks in large part to $1.4 million in funding from Utah County's tourism tax fund. The total $3.9 million upgrade also received support from the Utah Department of Natural Resources.
American Fork Mayor Brad Frost cut the ribbon for the Harbor's re-opening, which includes an improved paved parking lot, new restrooms, a welcome booth, shaded picnic areas, a playground, improved shoreline fishing access, and a 12-foot-wide trail. Beach improvements and a cornhole game area are still underway.
The improvements are part of an overall effort to improve and increase use at the lake.
"Utah Lake has been a resource for people since Utah was founded, from the tribes to pioneers," Mayor Frost said. "I hope people who come here will be safe and understand that they have a stewardship to this lake and to nature itself. That's our hope."
"This was an underused gem," said American Fork Community Services Director Derric Rykert. "Now it's a destination for recreation, families, and lake access."
Utah County Sheriff Mike Smith emphasized water safety at the ceremony, encouraging people to wear life jackets on the lake, noting that people underestimate the need for the devices due to the lake's shallowness.
Utah County officials say they're proud to help enhance this vibrant community space on Utah Lake.
