Today, Utah County Commissioners Brandon Gordon, Amelia Powers Gardner, and Skyler Beltran issued the following statement in response to Governor Cox’s state effort to support the incoming Trump Administration on deporting illegal immigrants who have committed crimes and pose a threat to public safety:
“As Utah County Commissioners, we are unified in our support for Governor Spencer Cox’s targeted state effort to crack down and deport illegal immigrants who commit crimes in our state and for supporting President Trump’s efforts to engage the federal government in those efforts actively. We fully support our Sheriff’s Office and justice system and understand what is needed to implement a thoughtful and practical approach to addressing this complex issue.
“Utah County is dealing with more than its share of violent gang-related crime; we’ve seen the drain on the quality of life in our communities and feel the pain that the Fentanyl crisis is creating for too many of our neighbors.
“Utah County welcomes lawful immigration while maintaining zero tolerance for those who threaten public safety. This initiative highlights the importance of effective federal and state partnerships in addressing border security and ensuring accountability for criminal organizations that exploit vulnerabilities in the system.
The safety and well-being of our residents is a priority, and we eagerly anticipate the opportunity to partner with federal and state law enforcement to defend the quality of life in Utah County effectively.”
