Arrest of Tyler James Robinson Potential Charges

September 12, 2025 Release: 11:00 PM

Orem, Utah – Utah County Attorney Jeff Gray provides the following statement regarding the arrest of Tyler James Robinson and the potential charges to be filed.

Arrest

Tyler James Robinson, of Washington, Utah, was arrested and booked into the Utah County Jail early Friday morning on suspicion of committing three crimes related to the murder of Charlie Kirk on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah.

The suspected crimes include:

Aggravated Murder (Utah Code § 76-5-202)

Obstruction of Justice (Utah Code § 76-8-306)

Felony Discharge of a Firearm Causing Serious Bodily Injury (Utah Code § 76-11-210)

Under Utah law, the penalties for these charges are as follows:

Aggravated Murder: Death penalty, life imprisonment without parole, or 25 years to life with parole eligibility

Obstruction of Justice: 1 to 15 years in prison

Felony Discharge of Firearm Causing Serious Bodily Injury: 5 years to life in prison

Mr. Robinson is currently being held without bail.

Potential Charges

Now that a suspect has been arrested, the Utah County Attorney’s Office will carefully review all evidence gathered by law enforcement to determine the appropriate charges. These charges will be formally filed in a document called a Criminal Information, which will initiate the formal criminal case against Mr. Robinson.

We anticipate filing the Criminal Information by noon on Tuesday, September 16, 2025. While every effort will be made to adhere to this schedule, additional time may be required to prepare the charges thoroughly. By court rule, the filing deadline may be extended by up to three days, until Friday, September 19, 2025.

The timing depends on the comprehensive review of a substantial volume of evidence. Our approach will be thorough and deliberate at every stage.

Given the investigation’s early and ongoing status, we cannot comment on specific charges at this time. However, it is expected that formal charges will likely align with those initially filed upon Mr. Robinson’s arrest.

It is essential to note that these charges are merely allegations. Under both the Federal and Utah Constitutions, Mr. Robinson is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

Press Conference

Assuming charges are filed on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, a press conference will be held to explain the charges and next steps in the case.

Date: Tuesday, September 16, 2025
Time: 12:00 PM MDT
Location: Utah County Health & Justice Building, Room 1600
151 South University Avenue, Provo, UT 84601

Please enter through the building’s east doors. See the attached map for building location and public parking.

If charges are not filed on Tuesday, the press conference will be rescheduled to coincide with the formal filing.

First Appearance

If charges are filed on Tuesday, Mr. Robinson will make his first court appearance the same day:

Date: Tuesday, September 16, 2025
Time: 3:00 PM MDT
Type: Felony First Appearance (via Webex)

This hearing will be conducted remotely. Media can access the live stream through the Utah State Courts’ X account: @UtahStateCourts.

The purpose of this hearing is to inform Mr. Robinson of the charges and ensure he has legal representation if he has not yet retained an attorney. The hearing is expected to be brief.

If charges are not filed on Tuesday, the first appearance will be rescheduled accordingly.
