JESSE WILLIAM GOURDIN

Jesse William Gourdin, 23, was sentenced to the Utah State Prison for Manslaughter and Aggravated Assault, both second-degree felonies. Each charge carries a prison sentence of 1-15 years.

On March 13, 2017, Maria Guadalupe Hernandez told Jesse William Gourdin, Brayden Kenneth Marshall, and Jerry Otis Hawley about money inside a house in Provo. A short time later, all four went to the Provo home with the intention of stealing the money. Marshall provided Gourdin with a 9 mm handgun. Hawley was the driver and Hernandez stayed in the truck with Hawley. Gourdin and Marshall approached the house with red bandanas covering their mouths. Gourdin and Marshall were unsuccessful in forcing open the front door of the home, so they circled around to the back of the house where Gourdin forced open the back door and ran inside. Almost immediately upon entering, Gourdin fired several rounds from the 9 mm handgun, killing Gustavo Ramirez. Other people inside the home scattered to seek cover. Upon hearing the gunshots, Marshall returned to the truck without entering the house. A short time later, Gourdin exited the home and ran back to the truck. Together all four fled the scene with Hawley driving.

Hernandez, Hawley, and Marshall were arrested two days later; Marshall had the 9 mm handgun in his possession at the time of his arrest. Gourdin was arrested three days later in Farmington, Utah. Officers were able to confirm that the incident was gang related.

Jerry Otis Hawley, 35, was sentenced on August 23, 2017. Hawley was found guilty of Burglary (second-degree felony), Robbery (second-degree felony), and Attempted Negligent Homicide (Class A Misdemeanor), and was sentenced to 365 days in the Utah County Jail and 36 months' probation.

Maria Guadalupe Hernandez, 19, was sentenced on December 13, 2017, to the Utah State Prison for 5 years to life for Aggravated Burglary (first-degree felony) and 1-15 years for Manslaughter (second-degree felony); charges to run concurrently.

Brayden Kenneth Marshall, 19, was sentenced on January 3, 2018, to the Utah State Prison for 5 years to life for Aggravated Burglary (first-degree felony) and 1-15 years for Manslaughter (second-degree felony); charges to run concurrently.

Jesse William Gourdin, 22, pleaded guilty on June 27, 2018 and was sentenced on August 8, 2018. Gourdin's charges of Manslaughter and Aggravated Assault will run consecutively.
