Ryan Christopher Hansen

On February 12, 2018, Ryan Christopher Hansen, 23, of Springville, was found guilty of five felony charges, including Aggravated Robbery, following a two-day jury trial in the 4th District Court of Utah.

On August 15, 2017, an American Fork police officer responded to a UTA property on the report of a suspicious male. Upon initial contact, the man (later identified as Ryan Hansen) refused to disclose his identity to the officer and then suddenly turned and ran away. Hansen ran to a nearby residence and entered through an unlocked, rear patio door. Several family members were at home at the time, including the homeowner. Hansen quickly grabbed some vehicle keys in a basket and ran out through the garage to a jeep parked in the driveway of the residence. The homeowner pursued Hansen and reached in through the open driver's side window, attempting to prevent Hansen from leaving. Hansen struck the homeowner in the face with his right closed fist, knocking the homeowner off the vehicle. Hansen sped away just as the pursuing police officer rounded the corner of the residence.

Despite the pursuit of multiple police vehicles with sirens and lights flashing, Hansen refused to stop the jeep and at one point, Hansen accelerated and rammed through flashing UTA track arms, warning of an oncoming train. Witnesses then observed Hansen driving through various residential yards and ramming through numerous fences to exit a cul-de-sac. Once back on a public street, Hansen narrowly missed hitting a small child who was crossing the street. Hansen ditched the jeep in American Fork and stole another unlocked vehicle with the keys already in the ignition.

Utah County citizens started reporting a reckless driver in Alpine, Utah. Hansen had driven again through multiple fences and yards, resulting in thousands of dollars of damage. Officers arrived to find the second stolen vehicle, crashed and unoccupied. A helicopter with the Department of Public Safety (DPS) was used to locate Hansen who was attempting to hide from police. Upon arrest, Hansen admitted to having recently used methamphetamine.

Ryan Hansen will be sentenced on March 28, 2018 by the Honorable Judge Thomas Low for conviction of the following charges: 1. Aggravated Robbery, a first-degree felony 2. Burglary, a second-degree felony 3. Theft, a second-degree felony 4. Criminal Mischief, a second-degree felony, and 5. Failure to Respond to Officer's Signal to Stop, a third- degree felony. Hansen is currently serving two consecutive sentences of 0-5 years in the Utah State Prison for previous felony charges.
