Sheriff Mike Smith says he will not be instructing Deputies to enforce gathering size restrictions by issuing citations at this time.
*** PRESS RELEASE March 19, 2020 ***
Concerns have been raised about the recent Public Health Order issued by the Utah County Health Department Executive Director, Ralph Clegg. On March 18, 2020, an order was issued that said, in part, “Gatherings of more than ten individuals are prohibited.” This order by the Utah County Health Department came following an order issued on March 17, 2020 by Dr. Joseph K. Miner, Executive Director of the Utah Department of Health, that said, “Gatherings of more than ten individuals are prohibited.”
These orders were issued as part of an effort to slow the spread of COVID-19 by limiting the number of people in any one place, thus reducing the likelihood of transmission of the virus from unknowing persons to others. Some of the concerns surround how this order might be enforced, should that become necessary. Sheriff Mike Smith has expressed that it is his hope that citizens of Utah County will act with a common goal of health and safety. He trusts the citizens of this county will act accordingly with each other’s best interests in mind and stated to reach this goal we each may need to make uncomfortable changes to our normal routines.
Recent media coverage has highlighted that a violation of this Health Department Order is a Class B misdemeanor. This information is true; however, Sheriff Smith has stated that he will not be instructing deputies to enforce this order through issuing citations at this time. He stresses this is a community problem and it is his desire to combat this as a community and asks for your support in this effort. He urges you to use common sense and patience as we all work together to keep our community safe.
