LUKE CHRISTIAN DOLLAHITE

On June 22, 2017, Luke Christian Dollahite, 16, was sentenced to a term of 10 years to life at the Utah State Prison for stabbing four classmates in the Mountain View High School locker room.

At 7:45 a.m. on November 15, 2016, wearing a red shirt and glasses, 16-year-old Luke Dollahite entered the men's locker room with a bō staff, five large knives, and other tools in his backpack, all methodically packed with the intent to kill as many people as possible, before killing himself. To accomplish his objective, Dollahite stabbed his victims in the neck, aiming for their jugular vein. Dollahite only knew one or two of his victims, calling one young man by name before stabbing him in the neck. All victims required immediate medical attention and three of the victims required surgery following the stabbing. One victim was stabbed in the back-right shoulder area and twice in his neck. One of the strikes hit his esophagus and cut a central nerve, resulting in permanent damage to the use of his right arm.

After Luke Dollahite was detained by the Mountain View High School Resource Officer who deployed a taser to stop the violence, Dollahite attempted to stab himself in his own neck which only resulted in a superficial cut. In preparation for the attack, Dollahite left a suicide note at home. After the rampage, when Dollahite was interviewed by Orem City police officers, he explained that he wore red because he expected there to be a lot of blood. He detailed his planning and preparation and was pleased that he successfully stabbed more people than he had originally anticipated. Dollahite explained to officers that he wanted to know firsthand what it felt like to stab people and that he had no specific targets.

Luke Dollahite pleaded guilty to five first degree felonies: four Attempted Aggravated Murder charges in juvenile court and one count of Attempted Aggravated Murder in the adult criminal system. Dollahite was sentenced to the care of the Utah Juvenile Justice System until potentially the age of 21. After he is released from the Utah Juvenile Justice System, Luke Christian Dollahite will begin his sentence of 10 years to life at the Utah State Prison.
