TRACY SCOTT

On August 22, 2014, Tracy Scott was sentenced to a term of 15 years to life in the Utah State Prison.

Tracy A. Scott, age 48, was sentenced to a term of 15 years to life in the Utah State Prison on August 22, 2014, after a jury found him guilty of 1st Degree Murder for shooting his wife of 18 years in the couple's bedroom of their Salem, Utah home on March 23, 2013. The matter-of-fact tone of Mr. Scott's voice during the 911 call on March 23, 2013 at 6:53 p.m. is chilling: Mr. Scott: "There's been a shooting." 911: "OK, who was shot?" Mr. Scott: "My wife." 911: "Who shot her?" Mr. Scott: "I did." Police officers from the Salem and Payson police departments responded to the crime scene, located at 455 East 300 South in Salem, to find the deceased victim, Teresa Jarrett Scott, still sitting on her bed, her crochet hook and yarn draped upon her lap, her legs extended and crossed at the ankles. The victim, age 45, was shot 3 times in the face and chest by her husband with a .45 caliber pistol. At the time of the shooting, the couple's two sons, ages 16 and 13, were not home. Witnesses during the week long jury trial, including the sons, testified that the marriage had been one of frequent arguing and fighting, and that Mr. Scott had physically assaulted Teresa previously, which was substantiated by a conviction of domestic violence in 2006. Mr. Scott's attorney petitioned the jury to find Mr. Scott guilty of the lesser offense of manslaughter, arguing that Mr. Scott shot his wife under "extreme emotional distress." However, the jury disagreed and found Mr. Scott guilty of murder.
