Utah County Canyons - Some Open And Some Closed

Posted On : 5/16/2019 1:17:05 PM

Some canyons in Utah County are open while others remain closed. Read further for additional information about what is open and what is closed.

*** PRESS RELEASE - May 16, 2019 ***

As Memorial Day and warmer weather approach many people are making plans that include time outdoors.  For many people in Utah County those plans include spending time in the canyons.  We want people to enjoy their experiences in the outdoors with friends and family, and to do that we want to help provide information about what canyons are open and what parts of canyons are still closed.  We also want people to be aware of dangers that exist year-round, but especially this year where there has been higher than normal snow fall.  Much of this information has been provided to us by Officials with the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest.  This information is the latest as it relates to the canyons and Forest Service areas only in Utah County.  We also encourage people to watch the Utah County Sheriff's Office social media accounts as well as U.S. Forest Service Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest Facebook page for updates.

-HIGH WATER!  This is going to happen!  Exercise extreme caution when near lakes, rivers, and streams.

-American Fork Canyon : Above Tibble Fork Reservoir:  Still closed due to snow and muddy conditions.

-American Fork/Provo Canyon : Alpine Loop Road (SR-92):  Still closed due to snow and not likely to be open by Memorial Day weekend.

-Hobble Creek Canyon : Left Fork:  Closed above private land, but below is snow packed with muddy conditions.

-Hobble Creek Canyon : Right Fork and Diamond Fork:  Open over the top and to Springville Crossing/Diamond Fork/Sheep Creek.

-Payson Canyon : Nebo Loop Road:  Open to Maple Lake.  Nebo Loop closed from Maple Lake to Salt Creek Junction due to snow pack.

-Santaquin Canyon: Due to the depth and volume of the recent avalanche this road remains closed until snow melts, debris is removed, and repairs can be made.

-Grotto trail:  The Grotto Falls Trail and trail-head in Payson Canyon are temporarily closed for public safety.  The fired that burned through this area during fall 2018 damaged a bridge and retaining wall.  Forest Service crews will need to wait until the high-water flows have diminished before repairs can be completed.

-American Fork Canyon waterline replacement project on SR-92:  This is an ongoing improvement project that is not expected to be complete until mid to late June.  Expect heavy delays and congestion for the Memorial Day weekend.  Visitors are strongly encouraged to consider recreation destinations outside of American Fork Canyon.

The U.S. Forest Service and the Utah County Sheriff's Office ask people to exercise good trail stewardship when enjoying the outdoors.  When hiking stay on designated trails.  Illegal routes created to access areas behind closures can cause resource damage and hazards to visitors.  Please respect closed gates.  They are closed for good reason and when people hike or climb around them they risk causing further damage to gates, roads and vegetation.  Vehicles may also get stuck, necessitating additional resources to remove them.
