Two Teens Charged In Fire Started With Fireworks

Two Saratoga Springs teens will be charged for their involvement in a fire they started while illegally using fireworks. Even this small fire may have big costs.

On June 26, 2017, at about 1:30 PM, Deputies with the Utah County Sheriff's Office responded to assist Utah County Fire Department with a report of a fire started with fireworks in an unincorporated area of Utah County near Saratoga Springs. This response included Fire Departments from Utah County, Saratoga Springs, Unified, and Lehi. Two boys, age 16 and 14, were lighting a firework called a "Ground Flower" when the fire started. This particular firework is legal, but there are restrictions on when they can be used legally. They can only be used 3 days before and 3 days after certain holidays, including July 4, July 24, and limited other holidays. A parent of one of the boys reported the fire. Both teens will be referred to Juvenile Court on charges of lighting fireworks outside of allowed days, an infraction, and lighting fireworks in a restricted area, a class B misdemeanor.

Fire officials reported that the fire was approximately 4.4 acres in size and from the time it was reported required 9 hours to have it fully extinguished. Despite the seemingly small size and short duration of this fire, the cost for fighting it was $12,000.00-$14,000.00. Those responsible for starting fires like this one can be required to reimburse those expenses.
