Beard Allowance Extended - Shop With A Cop A Huge Success

Sheriff Tracy extends allowance for beards as a way to thank those who participated in the Shop With A Cop fundraiser.

On October 4, 2016, Sheriff Jim Tracy suspended a longstanding grooming policy that forbid any sworn Deputy working in a uniformed assignment from growing a beard. Mustaches have been allowed, within strict guidelines, but beards were not approved. He took this action as part of a fundraiser for the local Shop With A Cop program. Deputies who paid $50.00 per month were allowed to grow a neatly trimmed beard in October, November, and December. The program is always well attended, but this year participation was off the charts. This year's effort raised $12,370.00 to allow children to buy gifts for Christmas. There is no overhead for this effort, and these donations helped approximately 123 children have a better Christmas than they would have otherwise had.

Sheriff Tracy considered having a contest where those who participated could enter and the winner would be allowed to continue growing a beard for two additional months. But because of the high level of participation he considers all participants to be winners. Today Sheriff Tracy notified all employees that in recognition of the incredible level of participation he will allow all who participated to continue to grow a beard until March 1st with no requirement to make a donation. Sheriff Tracy said, "I was seriously amazed at the unbelievably high level of participation from our people, not only from those who grew facial hair and made donations, but I am also aware of those who sponsored other employees or just made donations with out any outward showing of additional "hair"!"
