A 34 year old Springville woman was arrested for sexually abusing a 15 year old resident at the Birdseye Boys Boys Ranch where she was the former director.
On April 16, 2014, Detectives with the Utah County Sheriff's Office Special Victims Unit, working with the Utah County Special Victims Task Force, received a report from the Division of Child and Family Services (DCFS) regarding a 15 year old boy who had been sexually abused by a woman at the Birdseye Boys Ranch. This facility is in Spanish Fork Canyon on SR-89 near Birdseye in Utah County. The woman, Teresa Lee Cope, age 34, of Springville, was the director at the Birdseye Boys Ranch when most of the abuse occurred.
As detectives interviewed the victim he told them the abuse occurred at the Birdseye Boys Ranch, at two other locations in Utah County, as well as in Washington County. On April 23 Detectives executed a search warrant at Cope's home in Springville and collected evidence of sexual abuse by Cope that supported the information given to them by the victim. Cope was arrested and booked into the Utah County Jail on charges of 2nd degree felony Unlawful Custodial Sexual Relations, 3rd degree felony Sexual Activity With a Minor, and Class A misdemeanor Sexual Abuse of a Minor. Her bail was set at $10,000.00 cash only. That bail amount was posted and Cope was released from jail on April 25.
This remains an active investigation. At this time Detectives have no information leading them to believe Cope may have victimized other young men. Detectives shared information with investigators in Washington County and they may also file charges in this case.
